Increasingly, rumours have been pointing to a Diablo 3 launch announcement soon. A Diablo 3 blog can’t go one night without a news item relating to release (Diablo 3 News: Message from Mike Morhaime) interrupting valuable Diablo strategy writings – like the rest if this post.
Whether we believe these tidbits of release information (or mis-information) or not, it is time to begin planning our Diablo 3 entry strategy. Knowing how you plan to hit the ground running in the tempestuous first days and weeks of Diablo 3 launch can mean the difference between making a killing and being killed on the Diablo 3 RMAH.

Now, I’ve already shared some of my plans for how I’m going to make real money and gold in Diablo 3. I’m constantly working on new techniques and staying ahead of the information ‘curve’. I plan on continuing this after launch. I’ve some more plans being tested right now in the beta and ideas for what to do at launch stewing in my noggin.
Specific examples of the kind of things I’l be doing can be hunted down very easily in this blog. Take last weekend’s Patch 13 Diablo 3 Auction House Arbitrage I, Patch 13 Diablo 3 Auction House Arbitrage II and Patch 13 Diablo 3 Auction House Arbitrage III for example. Don’t be afraid to use the search bar and check out the different blog categories!
As a matter of fact, I’ve been pretty generous with techniques I plan to use in the Diablo 3 real money auction house! I can’t stop talking about that RMAH!
BUT here’s the thing… there’s one incredibly important factor that I haven’t talked about yet. This bad boy is crucial, I simply can’t stress how important what I’m going to share with you is. It’s also completely obvious and I’ve not seen anyone else offering advice along these lines… To better illustrate what I mean, check out this video:
Do you see how goddam ridiculously fun Diablo 3 is? I’m not even doing a good job of illustrating that here! Maybe you’ve been following the game for so long you’ve forgotten how much you wanted to play it when you first saw the videos. Maybe you’re jaded and burned out from multiple beta wipes and re-leveling sprees.
Whatever category you fall into, be prepared to have your excitement rekindled with a vengeance when Diablo 3 launches.
Here’s just some of the things I’ll be doing to make money:
- Watching, absorbing and acting on early auction house trends;
- Buying outlandishly low priced items and flipping them,
- Selling gold first, selling gold fast;
- Leveling like a beast to maximise the advantage of getting the best items first;
- Leveling even further to maximise the advantage of getting to the higher difficulties first;
- Testing existing and brand new item shuffles;
- Maximising my artisans efficiently;
- Figuring out the mechanics at the core of the auction house;
- More, more, more.
Do you know what will happen to those plans if I let the fun, the excitement and the adrenalin beat me? They’ll fall by the wayside. I’ll forget to periodically log out and check trends. I’ll forget to search for underpriced items. I’ll waste gold on amazingly fun novelty or forget to log out to sell it. I’ll spend hours trying each class out rather than leveling a predetermined choice. I’ll waste items trying for elusive (and improbably) crafting stats. The ways to get lost are endless! The Diablo 3 experience is truly a lovely, dark, deep and misleading wood!

What I want to impress upon everyone, myself included, is that we who plan to make a fortune in Diablo 3, need discipline – like the discipline you need when you sit down at a computer to do some work but get stuck surfing.
We can’t be any other player. Sure we can enjoy all of those lovely distractions in the game – I fully intend to – but not in the days and weeks just after launch.
That’s my keystone, my lynchpin, my framework for a Diablo 3 entry strategy. All other plans hinge on this discipline. If what I’ve written seems like a buzzkill to you, you’re right. IT IS. But if what I’ve written seems outlandish or unnatural and if you reject the validity of it, then either you don’t anticipate finding Diablo 3 fun or you’re kidding yourself. To truly make money in the first weeks of the Diablo 3 auction house post launch, we’re going to have to be responsible for our own destiny. We have a job to do. Once that job is taken care of, then we can have fun.
