Do you want to know how to get legendary items in Diablo 3? If this is your goal I think you should read the rest of this post – it may educate you and adjust your priorities… and I’ll also share a bit about what I know about finding legendary items.
There’s a lot of complaints about legendary items at the moment. First up, there are a lot of them (to be expected with the number of players on each region) but that’s not so bad. Mostly they’re in the 10s to 50s range. Most of these are only going to be used when levelling alts in style.
Second (and more importantly) people are starting to get level 60 legendary items – both crafted and dropped – and they are bummed about the stats. There are blues that are better.
Why is this?
Say you’re like me, you’re starting to farm the higher difficulties and you’re working the GAH, creating tons of gold. You haven’t seen a legendary item yet – you’re wondering where all the legendary items on the auction house come from – are people making them? In fact… they are. I discuss this in more detail within the diablo 3 gold guild.
So you decide to invest in crafting this item. You think there’s a good chance that although the cost to craft this is high, there’s a good chance you’ll get something you want or at the very least something you can sell for lots of profit.
You craft the item and check it out without realising you’re holding your breath. Unfortunately, those “3 random magic properities” didn’t play nice. You’ve got a sub-par legendary item on your hands. The magic item you already have equipped in that slot is better.
Does this seem wrong to you? I understand the design decisions behind it (see Bashiok’s comments below) but I’m not 100% sure it’s implemented right just yet:
Intended design is for an end-game characters to have a mixture of set/legendary, rare, and crafted items.
Legendary items are commonly not going to be the best items. It’s a title that denotes a named item, with set stats, and a unique model. It does not mean they’re the best items.
Completely random rares will be the best items in the game if they roll up the right stats.
I like the idea that there can be tiers of awesomeness (legendary legendary items) but I think the feeling of basically having to salvage or vendor an orange texted item might be very disheartening for some. RNG can be a cruel, heartless mistress.
Maybe you’re not deterred and you want legendary items anyway – and to be fair they just might (perfectly rolled) be some of the best items in game. I can tell you what I know (All these tips are expanded upon in my Diablo 3 Gold Guild Guide - I recommend you check it out -> click here <-) and it might help to maximise your chances of finding legendary items:
- Stack as much MF% as you can (but still dps and survive);
- Run the highest difficulty you can without dying;
- Ideally, level to 60;
- & get Nephalem Valor stacked up.
What do you guys think? Have you found any awesome legendary items or have you been disappointed by RNG?

Personally, I think D2 had a better system overall. Now, if Blizzard does a lot of tweaking to the current system it would be awesome. The system is almost comparable to how Diablo 2: Classic was. LoD brought most of what we think of Diablo now, so there’s defiantly plenty of room to work with. I do think they need to get rid of pointless rolls such as certain class-specific items rolling useless stats. Legendaries being salvaged or vendored just doesn’t make sense either. Yeah, I vendored quite a few useless (after 1.10+) uniques in D2 but this is a little different, D2 had patches that brought better uniques and at that point most players we’re already vending items like SoE’s etc. You hunt and hunt and you see that orange item and you get all excited just to be let down once you ID it. I also don’t understand the deal with item names. They show up Diablo 2-style on the ground (item-type name) and once you ID it you never see that name again, just the new name of what it is you IDed.
I love this game, but I do feel like a lot of work is going to be needed to make this last anywhere near as long as D2.
Being a casual gamer, I rearely see awsome items. When I do I’m always surprise to see them and then I am not sure what to do with it.
When I read what everybody writes about them it seems to me that I know absolutely nothing about items in Diablo. When something drops I just pick it up and see if its better than what I have. If it is way good for me if not on to the next one. I think this is the only thing that keeps me coming back for more.
All this to say that Ignorance is bliss. I kind of like the fact that whenever I play there is no real item that is sex in stone that might drop. in D2 you could find build that would tell you exactly which armor or weapon to get because whenever you got the item to drop it dropped the same way all the time. I for one don’t like that, If I find Item x 10 times it will be 10 different item makes me smile. It will also make me come back for more until it drops the exact way I want it.
I have found legendary items- a level 60 item and some low level stuff. In terms of getting legendaries via Magic Find runs, the chances are very low. However, getting good rare drops that are worth a few hundred thousand in gold isn’t too hard once you hit inferno and can hold your own with at least a moderate level of ease. The trick is to run inferno with as much magic find on your gear. To minimize time and maximize effectiveness it is preferable to have a buddy with decent MF similar to your magic find. The way D3 works is that it averages out all the players’ in game magic find. Having 3 people may take too much time due to monsters’ hp and damage shooting through the roof. However, with 2 people around the same MF, you will increase your chances of getting good drops. No player should ever have to “carry” the other player in terms of MF via gear.
Personally, I have around 216~222% magic find with 5 NV stacked. The results are very nice when I finish a unique monster or champion pack: I’m almost always guaranteed a yellow and multiple blues.
Stack em up.
I got 3 legendary items in normal mode – 2 before my wizard hit level 20. I was so excited only to find that all 3 were horrible compared to what I had already equipped. I have held onto them as I understand legendary items are needed later for salvage to get Fiery Brimstone.
