Commodities Coming to D3 RMAH Soon

by Ray

After a long time with a RMAH focused purely on items, we’ll soon be seeing commodities available for real money in Diablo 3. Gold, however, won’t be available for sale or purchase until the near future. As with most Blizzard ‘time frames’ (if you can call ‘soon’ and ‘future’ a true measure of time) we’re not quite sure when we can expect to see these features put in place:

The following commodities will be available soon for trading in the real-money auction house:

  • Gems
  • Dyes
  • Crafting Materials
  • Blacksmithing Plans and Jeweler Designs
  • Pages of Training

The ability to trade gold as a commodity won’t be included in this initial update, but we hope to enable it in the near future. Keep an eye on this thread for further updates.

Personally my money is on commodities appearing in the RMAH during weekly maintenance within a week or two and gold being available (if the commodity installation is smooth) during weekly maintenance a week or two after that.

In the meantime it gives us time to reflect on what we learned when items first became available for real money. There are patterns to be followed and money to be gained by the smart auctioneer! For example, the intial period of price fluctuations indicates that we may have many auctions going unsold together with a few selling for far more than their final, settled, value.

We’ll also be able to explore new, awesome arbitrage opportunities. One example could be: iLevel 60 plus items available for a pittance on the gold auction house with exquisite essences selling well on the RMAH.
